This and recent articles discuss a recent movement of succession in Sudan for the creation of a separate nation: South Sudan. The article looks at difficulties surfacing as the now whole nation splits into two separate nations. One issue is Sudan’s debt. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter with 100 other people from Carter Center, a United States’an - based organization aiming to enhance freedom of democracy, went to Sudan and nearby nations to act as observers and monitor elections.
These concepts tie into Bulhan’s theory “Amnesia of Euro-American Psychology.” Modern division of the African continent is part of a violent legacy of Europe. The division is not natural and not based on actual social systems of people who inhabited Africa. After slavery human trade was made illegal, “legitimate” trades became protected for new raw material markets to exploit (Bulhan, 43). Corrupt Europeans greedily divided Africa into colonies used for exploitation which lasted until World War II’s end. The domination continues unto today and is seen in power relations of this article.
With media proclaimed position as “monitor”, termed President Carter proclaimed much as to ongoing election process in Sudan in interview with CNN’s John Vause on January 10th, 2011. One “monitoring” claim was that when he met with President Omar al-Bashir of Northern Sudan two days before, Carter told al-Bashir had said “the entire debt should be assigned to North Sudan and not to the southern part. So in a way, Southern Sudan is starting with a clean sheet.”
Yet, later that day, foreign affairs ministry of the country categorically refuted these statements. Khalid Musa, the ministries spokesman, clarified that in reality during the meeting al-Bashir had called for international community to write off Sudan’s debts as a whole with Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative. The current nation of Sudan owes all together $38 billion. This is because “the country, both in the north and the south, do not have enough resources to pay these debts.” One of the other contested issues which continued to be brought up in the initial interview and in the subsequent report was as to revenues from oil in the nation. The South will receive much of the money from revenues if Sudan is divided.
President Carter accurately made known optimism of the people of Southern Sudan about their succession and start as a new nation. Still, his involvement in the issue as a mediator shows the flaw of the involvement of European(-like) nations and organizations in foreign national affairs which they should no longer be part of. Already, by becoming too involved and not speaking nor understanding the language Carter is creating false statements from important people who are now in power in the region. These false statements can likely lead to negative relations and conflict in the future between these separating political entities. Already, there have been 23 killed in the few days before the election in the disputed oil rich area of Abyei [this count as of the date 1/10/11].
Carter’s actions show [deeper] problems of positivism, as theoretically discussed by Martin-Baro. This theory of positivism makes for “blindness toward the negative” (Martin-Baro, 21). An example of such a false “positive” is seen in consequence which is globalization – not good impacts for the people. Globalization is result of past imperialistic – now labeled capitalist – practices which led to benefits of some nations and people at the expense of others [really these benefits go to only a select few people from a select few nations; majority of these nations’ populations also are left in the gutter].
Therefore, negative past actions are said to be justified when people like President Carter go to “monitor” elections such as in Sudan. These are said to “mimic” U.S.A. and present economic processes linked to U.S.A. democracy. Yet, these justifications do not look at what the problem REALLY IS. Despite good intentions, Carter only created more problems for the nation(s).
Throughout the interview, Vause continued to bring up his personal feelings of pessimism for the new nation which he declared is the sentiment of the rest of the world. He proclaimed that they were flawed with “disillusionment” for the future which would lead to “instability” and what he calls a “failed state in the making, which will create one of the poorest, most illiterate countries in the world.” As can be seen, a negative foundation for the new nation is being made by the media. Negative foundation in a large sense comes from the nations of power who began the oppression. Their ownership of power for the world, including through collective media, negatively guides controlled global change by making negative self-fulfilling prophesies. These allow globalized social engineering.
This again related back to Bulhans analysis of the Amnesia of Euro-American Psychology. How the debt itself owed by Sudan was made is due to Bulhan’s connection in the theory which he calls “Factors, Alcohol, and Gunpowder.” The debt which Sudan has taken out has all come from European-like powers – really debt for themselves since the debt was made so that the people of Sudan could buy items for war from European merchants (Bulhan, 47). Since instability in the Sudanese nation which will have caused succession may lead to Sudan having its debts written off, the European leaders who had originally meant to profit would be out of money [so socially engineer to prevent this].
Negativity from what is supposed to be an unbiased media could be, perhaps, used to continue oppression psychology. It may be the creation of a self-fulfilling prophesy so that the new nation will not succeed in separating. Due to the negative mindset created by the media the whole nation may remain one, continue to hold debt, and greedy lenders will continue to get “their” money and stay rich at expense of suppressed peoples.
If South Sudan does separate, globally pronounced [socially engineered] negative self-fulfilling prophesy from powers with authority will likely doom them to failure. The fulfillment created by this outcome of the self-fulfilling prophesy would be continued dependence.
Yet, what powers in charge of media, who lent moneys for war do not understand – or maybe do not want to understand – is unnatural colonization division has been detrimental to inhabitants since redistribution. It placed people of different and conflicting ethnic and religious backgrounds into the same social system where they are told they must get along and cooperate. Then, the European powers sell them guns and get them into billions of dollars debt by putting them at war against one another.
Thus, European powers continue to profit off of these already poor peoples as they fight [and kill each other] within the bad boundaries which the Europeans created to begin with. So maybe, as horrible as this would be, these powers know and like – since they profit off of – the detrimental situation European ancestors created in the bad division of Africa.
As John Duku a Sudanese diplomat stated “Over the years, unity imposed war on us; the unity imposed marginalization on us; the unity has imposed slavery on us. So what is the meaning of unity? For the people of South Sudan, it only means war.” Hopefully division of Sudan can bring freedom to people of Southern Sudan and unity amongst those for whom unity is truly important. Not false accord forced upon different and politically incompatible peoples FOR warfare profit for the Evil and greedy. Rather, there is need for the creation of a new nation based on the actual similarities of a people. With help of Liberation Psychology, there can be peace in Africa and elsewhere throughout the world.
